Soldier Surprises Daughter at Graduation

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A soldier stationed in Afghanistan surprised his daughter by attending her graduation even though he was still thousands of miles away.

Major Lyn Emory is stationed in Kabul, Afghanistan for his third deployment in the Army, and knew he wouldn't be able to make it to his daughter, Alex Emory's, graduation.

So with some help from school faculty and the Big Sandy Arena, he watched her walk across the stage via Skype.

A laptop was set up right in front of the stage so that he could hear and see the ceremony. And even though he was still thousands of miles away, he says it was the next best thing.

"I was just happy I could have been a part of it, and be there to see her walk across the stage. I saw her turn around and wave and it was a great substitute," said Emory.

Emory says Alex did know that he was trying to set something up for the graduation, but didn't know what it was. She will be attending Marshall University in the Fall.
