HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A dangerous heat wave is sweeping the nation, and here at home, thermometers reached higher than they have in five years.

The brutal heat isn't going anywhere, and not everyone had the luxury of staying in the air conditioning Thursday.

Keeping cool was the name of the game for some little leaguers, who played in weather that topped 100 degrees.

League 3 in Huntington brought plenty extra fluids and mist machines into the dugouts to keep the young athletes hydrated.

"We notify the coaches and players before the game to look for warning signs. Dizziness, light-headedness, weakness, feeling tired, those sorts of things,” League 3 Grounds Manager Todd Shell said. “You just have to stay on top of things."

In Charleston, slightly older athletes in the Senior League All-star baseball playoffs competed in the three-digit temperatures too.

"We have a really good group of coaches who I think look out for our kids,” parent Regina Stover said. “They bring the towels with the ice for them. They make sure they're drinking."

In Mason County, many people waited until later in the evening after the sun went down to come out to the Point Pleasant Regatta, but the heat had stuck around. A spokesman says two people there had to be taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion.
