HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- With the holiday shopping season in full swing, crime surely will follow.
West Virginia State Police troopers are reminding shoppers to be aware of their surroundings, as well as their belongings.
All it takes is a second or two for a purse thief to strike while your back is turned.
Historically, there's an increase in purse snatchings when holiday shopping kicks off. Troopers point out there's much more at stake than a handbag and a few dollars.
"You think of the stolen keys and credit cards and all the crimes that go along,” West Virginia State Police Sgt. Greg Losh said. “It's pretty big. It's not going away. It's something we need to pay attention to it every year."
Losh said if you don't have a purse you can wear across your body, you should consider getting one and make that your shopping purse.
