Victim of Brazen Beating and Robbery Speaks Out

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A brazen beating and robbery has one man scared in his own home.

It happened along Woodmont Road about 9:00 a.m. Thursday. Now, the two men accused in this case are on the run.

For the victim, Michael Perry, it was a simple trip to the trash can that quickly turned violent.

"I heard 'em, I turned around and they were right here," Perry said.

In broad daylight, Perry had no clue what was lurking in the shadows.

He says two men wearing gloves and ski masks came up from behind him, and just seconds later, he was on the floor of his bedroom.

"They hit me in the back, knocked me down, stomped on me. My nose was bleeding," Perry said.

When they demanded cash, Perry told them he didn't have any -- until one of the men put a gun to his face.

"When you're staring down the barrel of a gun, you'll give up some stuff unless you just wanna go," Perry said.

Perry says the men got away with about $700 to $800.

"I just can't believe they've got that much nerve anymore," John Jarvis, a neighbor, said.

Jarvis has lived here for about 50 years. He says this surpasses the car and home break-ins they're used to seeing.

"It's getting pretty close. If I'm next door, it tends to bother me a lot," Jarvis said. "He's a good friend, he's a neighbor, I know his family."

Perry's home is actually the one he grew up in. In more than 30 years, it's the first time he's felt unsafe.

"Every time I step out the door, it's definitely gonna be something I look out for now," Perry said.

Neighbors say it seems as though the crime there is getting worse. Huntington Police say it is a neighborhood they keep an extra eye on, but as far as a spike in crime -- they haven't seen anything out of the ordinary.
