HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- What a difference a mural can make. We've seen the metamorphosis from drab to fab on local floodwalls and in city parks.

Huntington is at it again, sprucing up the area under another viaduct and drawing on community support to provide an economic boost.

Brier Smith, a youngster who loves trains, was joined by his dad Monday to spruce up the 8th Street underpass. They were among dozens of volunteers working to give it a much-needed facelift.

Fellow volunteer Cara Hedrick said, “We knew this was going to be important to the city and wanted to help in any way we can."

Huntington's Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals Committee is spearheading the project with grant money provided several years ago from the Cabell County Commission.

Hedrick, who works with the Cabell-Huntington Convention and Visitor's Bureau, sees it as much more than an art project.

“The more we can do to bring people into the city, the more tax dollars they pay and the less residents have to pay,” she said.

“We kept the old roses that were here before,” Christine Borders said.

Borders is part of the bulldog creative design team that blended a little of the old with the new.

“We used some bright colors to punch things up and then added the river and rail,” Borders said.

Aaron-Michael Fox is a local artist just excited to roll up his sleeves and help.

“I'm so excited that I'll be able to drive by for decades, hopefully, and see this contribution,” Fox said.

That was the sentiment of a lot of those volunteering. The Young Professionals Committee is responsible for the 10th Street underpass project last year and will take the Hal Greer underpass next year.
