HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- An alert school bus driver took action to avoid what could have been a serious accident.

A Wayne County School Bus, transporting one child, was traveling east on Piedmont Road in Huntington when the driver of the bus noticed a vehicle traveling the opposite direction begin to drift into his lane.

The driver stopped the bus, but the car continued until it hit the front of the bus at a low speed. No one was injured, but according to Joe Combs, with the Huntington Police Department, the driver appeared to be under the influence. A spray can of an unknown substance was found on the seat next to the driver.

The driver of the car told police she was on her way to pick up her child from an elementary school and needed to get there. Combs said fortunately this was a low speed impact.

"Thankfully there were no children exiting or entering the bus, yeah that could have been tragic," Combs said.

Combs said the driver had been involved in a hit and run at Cogan's Towing just before the accident with the bus. Charges are pending and she has been taken to the Western Regional Jail.

The school bus was coming from Vinson Middle School.
