PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A shopping complex that's expected to help revitalize an area devastated by the recent loss of coal mining jobs came closer to reality Monday in Pikeville.

Six big brand name stores will be among several businesses located there: Marshalls, Hobby Lobby, Maurices, Ross, Rack Room Shoes, and Ulta. Officials say there are many other stores and restaurants that will be announced soon.

The news came just days after the loss of more than 500 coal mining jobs in the region.

"It is timely and it is unfortunate what is happening to our economy based on what is happening on a national level, but we don't need to lay down and take it," Pikeville City Manager Donovan Blackburn said. We need to look for ways to diversify ourselves."

In addition to the jobs created by the retail stores, an estimated 100 construction and development jobs will be created.

The nearly $40 million project also will include a 200-unit apartment complex.

Construction will begin in the next seven to 10 days. The project will be completed in phases, with the first store opening in four to six months.
