8 Charged with Illegally Getting, Cashing Checks from Water Board

INEZ, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A grand jury in Martin County has indicted eight people for their role in the alleged theft of more than $30,000 the local water board.

On February 7, the grand jury indicted 24-year-old Jerry L. Maynard, 26-year-old Colby C. Maynard, 35-year-old Nannie Lucy Blackburn, 38-year-old Alvin Wesley Johnson, 28-year-old Melissa Hinkle, 29-year-old Justin Keller and 27-year-old Sean Keller, all of Inez, along with 34-year-old Dennis Scott of Pilgrim.

Each is charged with engaging in organized crime-criminal syndicate.

According to the indictments, the alleged thefts from the Martin County Water Board took place between August 2012 and October 2012.

KSP Detective Jason Dials tells WSAZ.com that one of the female defendants worked for an accounting firm that handled the Water Departments financials and access to the accounts payable account.

Dials says the other defendants got the checks through her. He says approximately $32,000 worth of checks were cashed at various locations by the defendants.

Court officials say Scott, Justin Keller, Sean Keller, Hinkle and Blackburn have been arrested and will be arraigned on February 21.

Arraignments for Jerry Maynard, Colby Maynard, and Johnson have not been scheduled.

If convicted, each faces 10 to 20 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000.
