ASHLAND, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A group of people in Ashland celebrated a major accomplishment Monday night.
The group was the first graduates of the Citizens Police Academy since 1998.
More than a dozen people spent the past seven weeks learning the day to day functions of the Ashland Police Department and dealing with real-life scenarios.
Police say it’s all about opening up that line of communication between the community and the department and getting a better understanding on both ends.
“They come in from the community and see what police officers are faced with on a daily basis. They learned more about how we operate and why we do the things we do,” said Ashland Police Chief Robert Ratliff.
There were 14 graduates from the academy.
