ASHLAND, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Ashland Fire Chief Scott Penick says the fire appears to have started near a space heater inside the storage building.

"One of the initial reports says the fire was seen around the area of a space heater," Penick said. "However, we are going to dig the building out and try to confirm and determine the cause."

Ina Kirk of Ashland was able to salvage photographs and jewelry from her apartment after firefighters knocked out most of the flames. Her apartment sustained heavy damage from the fire.

"I'm really upset, but I'm glad I was able to save a few things, especially my jewelry," Kirk said. "I've lost everything."

Kirk's daughter, Sarah Mills of Ashland, says she got a phone call from her mother and feared for the worst. After hearing her mother's voice on the other end, she breathed a sigh of relief.

"I just thought thank God she's OK," Mills said. "I wasn't even worried about the material things. I just thought thank God my mom is alright. I love my mom."

The building that caught fire is behind J & J Restaurant. The restaurant was not damaged.

No one was injured in the fire, but the building which housed apartments on the second floor, and businesses on the first floor sustained heavy damage.

The fire started in the building behind Justice Flowers, which was used for storing supplies. According to a friend of the owners, the building may have contained a kerosene heater. The fire spread from the storage building to the building housing Justice Flowers and another business, as well as three second-floor apartments.

“[The firefighters] pounded on my door and said, ‘Get out, your building’s on fire,’ ” Ina Kirk said.

Kirk, who lives in one of the second-floor apartments, said she had no idea what was going on until the firefighters arrived. She said she was watching television and didn’t hear or smell anything.

“I just grabbed my dog and got out,” she said.

According to Emergency Medical Services, no one was injured. But for the people who witnessed the fire, there was a sense of loss -- not only for the physical damage, but for the years of memories that went up in flames.

Diane Clark, who works at J & J Restaurant, described the legacy of the late John Justice, who founded both the restaurant and the flower shop.

“You would never find another man like that. He helped everybody,” she said. “If you wanted something to eat and didn’t have [any] money, come into his restaurant. He’d feed you.”

Now, the owners, including John’s wife, have lost everything. So have the residents of the second-floor apartments above the flower shop. Kirk said she would stay with family members for the time being.

“Just start all over again,” she said of her plans. “What else can you do?”

The fire in the 5200 block of 13th Street was called in just before 11:30 a.m. Friday.

Firefighters believe the fire started in a detached garage and then spread to the two-story building.

No one was injured in the fire, but the building which housed apartments on the second floor, and businesses on the first floor suffered heavy damage.

Traffic is backed up on 13th Street in the area of the fire.

Fire crews say part of the building’s roof has collapsed and they working to keep the fire from spreading.
