UPDATE 10/16/12 @ 6:45 p.m.
PAINTSVILLE, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Over Paintsville Lake, the sky on Tuesday evening was a palette of colors that seemed to explode against a backdrop of blue water and the orange and red leaves.
In the sky were balloons of yellow, pink and purple. Those balloons were launched to remember Crystal Fyffe who was shot to death last week in Jackson County, Ohio.
"Her voice was silenced," Lilly Fyffe said. "We have to be her voice now and call attention to domestic violence."
Crystal, who would have been 34 years old on Tuesday, Oct. 16, was shot in the head by Bobby McCormick, a man with whom she had a daughter and a long-term relationship, before McCormick turned the gun on himself.
"Deputies had been called to the home before," Jackson County Sheriff John Shasteen said. "It seems this is a tragic end to a cycle."
Martha Lemaster, who is Crystal's cousin, said, "Every one knew it would end this way. He had a file this thick on him -- domestic violence, concealed weapons, breaking and entering."
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Tuesday's balloon launch hopefully lifted away the pain for some of Crystal's family members."
"It's been so hard" Lemaster said. "I wish we could have done more; I wish she were here with us today."
Crystal Fyffe and Bobby McCormick were buried Saturday in Jackson County, Ohio.
"We know there was an argument," Sheriff John Shasteen said. "We know it was bad enough to produce a gun and a threat to send the family outside. But why there was an argument, at this point, we still don't know."
A frantic 911 call came in at 10:49 p.m. Thursday. Shasteen says it was the sister of suspect Bobby McCormick. In that call, she's heard saying that her brother had a gun and was holding her sister-in-law hostage.
"It's just tragic" Shasteen says. "These young children will have no mother or father for their rest of their lives. It's a sad situation."
The sheriff says evidence points to the fact that McCormick, 36, shot Crystal Fyffe, 33, in the head with a .22-caliber handgun before turning that gun on himself.
McCormick has a long history of run-ins with the law. There are 22 different cases posted on the county's Municipal Court website. Some of them revolve around domestic violence.
Shasteen confirms to WSAZ.com that deputies had been sent to that address -- 2389 Limerick Road in Liberty Township before.
The sheriff says the investigation is ongoing. As of Wednesday afternoon, he still had to talk with the three minors in the home at the time of the argument.
He said it's unclear how many of those children had both victims as their biological parents.
Sheriff John Shasteen tells WSAZ.com that Jackson County 911 received a call at 10:49 p.m. that Bobby McCormick, 36, had a gun pointed at Crystal Fyffe who was 33-years-old. When investigators arrived to the scene, located on Limerick Road in Liberty Township, they heard two gunshots.
"It appears McCormick had Fyffe on the back porch" says Shasteen. "When he heard the police cruisers arrive, he shot her and then himself."
The victims did have a relationship and lived together in the home. There were three children also in the home at the time. They were not harmed.
WSAZ.com's Bill Murray is headed to the scene.
