INEZ, Ky. (WSAZ) --The FBI is now investigating the death of an inmate at the United States Penitentiary, Big Sandy, Kentucky.
The incident happened Monday afternoon in the housing unit, and involved multiple inmates according to a new release.
The Department of Justices says Gregory Kittle, 32, was taken to a local area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Kittle was serving a 113-month sentence for simple assault, assault with intention to kill, assault on law enforcement officer, threats to injure a person, and possession of a firearm.
He was sentenced in the District of Columbia, and had been in custody at prison since October 2012.
No staff or other inmates were injured. The prison was placed on lockdown following the incident.
The Floyd County Coroner says the inmate at the U.S. Penitentiary Big Sandy was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead about 5:00 p.m. Monday.
Officials have not released the name of the inmate, why he was in prison or how he died.
