Louisa Police Department Issues Scam Alert This Holiday Season

LOUISA, Ky. (WSAZ) -- With Christmas less than one month away, people are struggling with their holiday budgets in the countdown to the big holiday.

"I have five great grandchildren and one on the way," said Mary Worrix of Crum, W.Va. "I can't get anything for them because of cash. It's stressful."

The Louisa Police Department knows there are people out their preying on people's vulnerability and needs this holiday season. The department has issued a "Scam Alert" for residents, after getting several calls about unsolicited phone calls and mailings requiring ID verification to win prizes and money.

"How it works, is they offer people a sweet deal," Louisa Police Chief Greg Furgitt said."You win something but they need to verify your ID with credit card or banking information. People unknowingly get wiped out."

Here's the bulletin posted on the Louisa Police Department's website:

“As the holiday season gets into full swing, so are several scams. The Louisa Police Department would like for the citizens of Lawrence County to beware of such scams.

“One such scam is a postcard type with a phone number for the recipient to call. Once you call they ask for a “Claim Number” in which then they proceed to tell you that you have won a prize and all they need is your debit or credit card information so they can process the claim.

“I have talked with Louisa Postmaster Tonya Maynard who advised me that she also had a report of another letter type of scam. Mrs. Maynard and I would like to advise anyone receiving such letter or post card to not contact the number nor follow any of its instructions that might jeopardize your personal or banking information.”

Anyone who has been a victim of such scam is advised to file a complaint with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at (877) 876-2455. You also can find a direct link to the Postal Service from our Featured Links here at WSAZ.com
