UPDATE: 10/25/12 @ 10 p.m.
GREENUP COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) – You don't have to have a nose for news to tell the contents of two packages, shipped in the U.S. mail, were suspicious.

"This stuff smells so strongly, there is no way they were going to keep it from smelling," Greenup County Sheriff Keith Cooper said.

Postal inspectors notified the Greenup Sheriff's Department about the packages, being shipped from Arizona to a home on Cherokee Way in Argillite.

"We allowed the people to go ahead and get the delivery of them," Cooper said.

Deputies pulled up to James Hay Sr.'s home Thursday after the postman dropped off the boxes. When Hay saw them, he took off toward the woods.

"He ran out the back door with the packages," Cooper said.

As deputies caught up with him, they say Hay began to pull out a handgun. They managed to get it away from him.

The gun contained special bullets the sheriff calls "man-killers."

"It's worrisome you've got ammunition for one purpose and one purpose only, and that's to take a man down, not hunt with,” he said. “It's to kill somebody."

James Hay Jr. was also in the home. Cooper says he gave deputies permission to open the packages, which contained 22 pounds of marijuana. He was also arrested.

"It's hard to believe they thought they could get by with it,” neighbor Bobbi Hale said.

The marijuana appears to have originally come from Mexico, the sheriff says.

Investigators in Arizona are now looking into who sent those packages.

GREENUP COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A father and son are in jail after authorities say they received a tip about a possible drug delivery to their house in Greenup County.

Sheriff Keith Cooper says his office received information from U.S Postal Inspectors about a package that was mailed from Arizona to a residence in the 400-block of Cherokee Way in Argillite.

Sheriff Cooper says Deputies and Postal inspectors staked out the house as two packages were delivered Thursday morning.

Copper says investigators watched as 66-year-old James Hay Sr. ran into the house with the packages that were just delivered to him, and then run out the back door towards the woods.

Hay, Sr. was arrested after short chase.

The Sheriff says his son; 38-year-old James Hay Jr. was inside the residence and came out with no resistance.

When deputies opened the packages, they found approximately 22 pounds of marijuana.

Both men were charged with trafficking in marijuana. Hay Sr. is also charged with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.

Both men are currently in the Greenup County Detention Center.

Sheriff Cooper says that more arrests may be made by authorities in Arizona as the investigation continues.
