JOHNSON COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Police in Johnson County say the man who robbed several convenience stores by confusing employees last month may have been doing the same thing in Virginia.

According to Johnson County police, the Virginia State Police say the man may have been working in Virginia and scamming stores the same way there.

Managers of several local convenience stores say the man scammed employees by giving the cashier money, then asking to see it because it had a phone number he needed. He then asked for change from the money.

Anyone with information should call the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.

ORIGINAL STORY 1/24/13 @ 9 a.m.

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) -- Authorities in Johnson County are looking for a man accused of scamming several stores out of hundreds of dollars, and they say he is doing it by confusing employees.

"He's paying for the items, but then essentially he's trying to get the money back and more," said Sheriff’s Deputy Terry Tussey.

Paintsville Valero Manager J.R. Abdon says the man gave his clerk a $50 bill then asked to see it because it had a phone number on it he needed. Abdon says that is where the confusion began.

"She gave it back to him, and he got her confused about it some more and wanted his change so it kind of escalated from there," he said.

Employees at the Valero say the man was in the store for nearly 20 minutes. They say he spent most of the time talking to the cashier trying to confuse her to get more money back, and Abdon says it worked.

"Got away with some money about $150 total. We went back and watched the videos and confirmed that it was true,"said Abdon .

Deputies say the man has hit at least three stores in Johnson County, but they are still looking for him.

"He's pretty good at it. I mean you know he knew what he was doing when he came in, and he had it planned out what to do and how to do it," said Abdon.

Investigators say the man has gotten away with nearly $400 total from three stores and are not sure where his next target might be.

Police say the suspect was last seen driving a red Kia Soul.
Anyone with information should call the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.
