OLIVE HILL, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Voters have decided to allow alcohol sales in the city of Olive Hill.

According to unofficial results on Tuesday, the measure passed with 257 voting in favor of it and 206 voting against it.

Turnout was 39 percent -- heavier than expected by city officials.

OLIVE HILL, Ky. (WSAZ) – Officials say turnout is heavier than expected in Olive Hill, Ky. where voters are deciding whether to legalize the sale of alcohol in the city.

Voting is taking place until 6 p.m. at the Olive Hill Senior/Community Center.

If approved, businesses would have to get a license to sell alcohol from the ABC administrator and the state's regulatory body.

Businesses could sell packaged liquor, and restaurants that seat at least 100 customers, with 70 percent of sales coming from food, could sell alcohol by the drink.

Stand-alone establishments that serve alcohol by the drink would not be permitted even if the issue is approved.

Results of the election should be known by 6:30 p.m.

OLIVE HILL, Ky. (WSAZ) -- You could say it's the elephant in the room that no one is talking about, but everyone is thinking about.

On Tuesday, voters in Olive Hill, Ky., will decide whether to legalize the sale of alcohol in the city.

If approved, businesses would have to get a license to sell alcohol from the ABC administrator and the state's regulatory body.

Businesses could sell packaged liquor and restaurants that seat at least 100 customers, with 70 percent of sales coming from food, could sell alcohol by the drink.

Stand-alone establishments that serve alcohol by the drink would not be permitted even if the issue is approved.

The Mayor wouldn't comment on the issue but said the results will be posted within 30 minutes of polls closing.

Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday. Voting will take place at Olive Hill Senior/ Community Center.
