Open Enrollment Scheduled Oct. 1 for Affordable Health Care Act

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Open enrollment for people seeking healthcare coverage begins Oct. 1 under the Obama Administration's Affordable Health Care Act.

The marketplace will be in place to help Americans find health coverage, by allowing them to see if they can get lower cost options based on their income. It will also allow them to enroll.

Ellen Potter, who is with the West Virginia Offices of the Insurance Commissioner, doesn't see a huge rush when the enrollment period starts.

"I kind of thing people will wait and see and take their time to enroll," Potter said. "It's a three-month period, so January 1, 2014, is the date any of the plans will go into effect."

Shawn Crouse lives in Kanawha City, W.Va. He works 40 hours a week and doesn't have health benefits. But he doesn't think the Affordable Health Care Act is the answer.

"How are they going to make people who are underemployed or force them to buy healthcare?" Crouse said. "How can they make that affordable when people are having a hard time putting food on the table right now?"
