Pike County Looking to Put New Rehab Facility Above Current Jail

Posted: Thu 9:46 PM, Feb 07, 2013

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A new rehab facility, could help more inmates get drug treatment, while incarcerated.

Pike County is looking at the possibility once the new $30 million judicial center opens in early summer 2013.

The circuit clerk and several judges will move into the new building which are currently housed in the Hall of Justice.

That will free up the entire third floor, which is just one flight up from the Pike County Detention Center.

"Approximately 85-90 percent of our jail population is people with drug or alcohol problems," Judge Kelsey Friend said. "It's been proven repeatedly, that people need help overcoming this disease, otherwise, they're just back in jail."

The program would be run by WestCare, which already has a presence in Pike County.

In a letter to WSAZ, Jeff Caudill, the deputy chief of staff, writes:

"WestCare Kentucky serves the Eastern, Southeastern and Central Kentucky Regions. Substance abuse treatment services and re-entry mentoring services are provided in the local detention center in Pike County, Kentucky."

The proposed location would add a 120 bed facility on the third floor of the Hall of Justice.

Currently, there are 84 clients enrolled in the Pike County Jail program.
