UPDATE: Man Sentenced in Fatal Crash that Killed Passenger

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A man who pleaded guilty to 2nd degree manslaughter for a wreck that killed a passenger in his car is headed to prison for eight years.

William Akers, 34, of McAndrews, was sentenced Friday in Pike County Circuit Court.

Akers was given credit for time served which was 151 days according to court officials.

The accident happened on US 119 in Pike County in March 2012.

Investigators say Mark Scott, 35, was a passenger Akers' car that ran into the back of a coal truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A published report says Akers was driving under the influence at the time of the wreck.

Akers was originally charged with murder in connection with the crash.

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A man charged with murder after a passenger in his vehicle died in a wreck with a coal truck has agreed to a reduced plea deal.

The accident happened on US 119 in Pike County in March 2012.

Kentucky State Police say 35-year-old Mark Scott was a passenger in the car and died.

William Akers, 34, of McAndrews, was charged with murder in connection with the crash.

Monday, Akers was supposed to go to trial on the charge, instead he pleased guilty to second-degree manslaughter during a hearing in Pike county Circuit Court.

Akers will be sentenced on June 21 according to court records.

PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A man is charged with murder after a passenger in a vehicle died when they wrecked into a coal truck.

The accident happened on US 119 in Pike County in March 2012.

Kentucky State Police say 35-year-old Mark Scott was a passenger in the car and died.

William Akers has been charged in the murder.

According to the Pike County Circuit Clerk's Office, Akers was indicted on a murder charge on January 16. He was arraigned on January 25 and no bond was set.

Friday Akers was in court again for a bond hearing. His bond was set as a $20,000 property bond. If he makes bond, he will be on home incarceration with GPS monitoring. Akers is also not allowed contact with the family of the victim, or allowed to drive a vehicle.

A pretrial hearing is scheduled for April 5. If Akers does not make a plea on that date, a trial date will be set.

PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A crash in Pike County left one person dead and two others recovering.

Police say Mark Scott,35, was a passenger in a car that ran into the back of a coal truck Thursday night along U.S. 119 near Pike Central High School.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two others in the vehicle, William and Crystal Akers, were taken to Pikeville Medical Center.

Their conditions are unknown.
