JOHNSON COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A race car driver from Carter County is recovering following a crash at the 201 Speedway in Johnson County.

It happened Saturday night in the Halloween 50 race.

Track officials say driver Josh McGuire, of Grayson, was going nearly 100 MPH when he entered the first turn on his fourth lap when the car began to flip. Tony Sturgill says,"The car seemed to veer over on its side and began flipping, a vicious flip and it rolled and rolled."

The crash left the number 41 car mangled, and the nearly 1500 spectators in the stands silent.

"At first we thought everything was alright because he was only complaining of minor neck pain but we transported him to the hospital for precautionary reasons," says Sturgill.

Doctors found that McGuire had a fracture in his C1 vertebrae. He was flown to St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington where he is now recovering.

Family members say McGuire is very lucky and will be ok.

"God definitely had his hands on him in that car that is for sure, because when you look at the statistics of these injuries and even when you Google C1 vertebra fractures...not very many good things show up," says Tracy McGuire.

According to a post on McGuire's Facebook page, a neurosurgeon says they do not think McGuire will need surgery but will spend the next three months in a neck brace. He is still in the hospital, but expected to go home soon.
