ASHLAND, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A rescue dog, bound for our region, never made it home. It's a local issue capturing the attention of dog lovers across the country.
The Ashland Animal Rescue Fund says a volunteer promised to drive to Tennessee to pick up a dog. But after she got the dog, she never showed up.
“We do rescue to save them one at a time, and it was her turn to be rescued and we just hope we can get that done,” AARF founder Dave Gillum said.
Ruby was set to be euthanized at a shelter in Georgia. Dave Gillum helped orchestrate her rescue, as well as made plans to have a volunteer from AARF meet a volunteer from Georgia in Tennessee to pick up Ruby. But after picking up the dog, the volunteer never showed back up.
“She knows we want to talk to her,” Gillum said. “I'm hoping that at some point in time she realizes to just give us a call.”
WSAZ.com tracked down the rescuer and asked her what happened.
“You know why I went and got Ruby Tuesday? I was the only volunteer that would go to Knoxville and back on a day trip because I'm in the middle of a custody battle and I needed to clear my head,” Grace Fout said.
Fout says the trouble started on her way down to Tennessee. What was supposed to be a four-hour trip took eight.
“I think the Devil's chasing me or something because we're trying to get there, but just hold on and save Ruby,” Fout said.
She eventually got there, and Ruby was everything AARF had expected.
“He gave me a pit bull mix who was nothing but a sweetheart,” Fout said. “All she wanted to do was kiss me to death -- 35 pounds of pure love.”
But after that, the trouble started. Ruby and Fout's dog didn't get along. At a truck stop, she tied Ruby up outside while she went in to go to the bathroom. When she came back, Ruby was gone.
“I said, 'Ruby!' ” Fout said. “’Cause I seen the leash chewed through. And Brady was sitting right there.”
Fout says she thinks she knows where Ruby may have gone.
“So what happened with her, where'd she go?” WSAZ.com's Lauren Schmoll asked.
“Kansas, last I heard,” Fout said.
“How'd she wind up there?” Schmoll asked.
“A trucker,” Fout said.
She says when she was inside, she saw a trucker playing with Ruby.
“There was a man there that was lonely,” Fout said. “Lookin' for his dog back home. But he was working and he was headed to Kansas. Going back to Tennessee. Somewhere in eastern, I mean western Tennessee. And he was feeding her beef jerky and letting her sit on his lap. And I got a hunch. I got a good hunch. A gut feeling.”
Now AARF just hopes Ruby makes her way back home.
