PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Supporters of the coal industry gathered Friday to discuss what is referred to as the "War on Coal" by government regulations.

U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell is sponsoring what he calls, “The Coal Country Hearing EPA Refused to Have.”

The discussion is taking place at the University of Pikeville.

More than 200 concerned workers, business leaders and local politicians are expressing their concerns on the future of coal.

Howard Abshire is a laid off miner who brought his coal helmet and a broken heart because he can't support his family.

Abshire says he doesn't want help, he wants to work for his family and keep the lights on for others, “I have something with me, this is coal; this is what keeps the lights on. They will light the national Christmas tree with this coal; this is what keeps the lights on. “

McConnell wants to take the people's voice to Washington with the hope of reducing regulations on coal mining and the people of Appalachia.
