PHYLLIS, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Firefighters at the Grapevine Volunteer Fire Department in Pike County, Ky. say they are taking more precautions after pieces of their equipment were stolen during the first hours of 2013.
"We had one of the neighbors call me at about 1:30 and told us he saw somebody come over and get something at the fire department," said Dean Rowe, Chairman of the Fire Department Board.
The neighbor says he witnessed two subjects taking batteries from one of the engines parked outside and putting them in their car.
"We've got 2 batteries missing out of our pumper tanker outside and right now that is the only thing we know is gone but 2 batteries are gone," Rowe said.
Rowe is thankful the neighbor got a good look at the car.
"The neighbor came out by the road and watched the car go by and he saw it to be a little red Neon he believed it to have Virginia tags," said Rowe.
The fire department is taking precautions to make sure this does not happen again.
"They need to know that we've put cameras today on the fire department and we will be watching for them," said Rowe.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Kentucky State Police.
