NEW INFO: Driver in Deadly Floyd County Crash Sentenced

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Nearly a dozen family members of the victims of a crash that killed their loved one watched and cried as the man responsible for their deaths was sentenced Thursday afternoon.

James Slone, 33, of Melvin, Kentucky, was sentenced to 20 years on two manslaughter counts, 24 years on two assault counts and 90 days on a DUI charge during a hearing in Floyd County Circuit Court Thursday. The sentences will be served concurrently.

In June, Slone pleaded guilty to the charges in connection with the fatal accident that killed Jeffrey Hamilton, 36, of McDowell, and Karen Mitchell, 43, of Hi Hat.

Slone was traveling east on Ky. 122 in June of 2011, when he crossed the center line colliding with a truck driven by Hamilton. Mitchell was a passenger in Slone's truck

Kimberly Hamilton is the wife of Jeffery Hamilton. She was in the truck with her husband when the crash happened. She was also six months was pregnant with their son at the time.

She says Slone should have gotten a life sentence for each death.

“It was no accident, it was a wreck, it was a drunk causing a wreck. I never have thought of it as an accident because it’s no accident when you choose to drive drunk," said Hamilton.

Jeffery Hamilton would have turned 39 on Sunday.

Slone was originally charged with two counts of murder, four counts of assault and one count of DUI in connection with the accident.

FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A man charged with two counts of murder in connection with a fatal traffic accident has pleaded guilty to lesser charges.

James Slone, 33, of Melvin, Kentucky, entered the plea Friday in Floyd County Circuit Court. Slone’s trial was supposed to start Monday.

Investigators say Slone was driving east on Kentucky 122 in June 2011 when he crossed the center line, colliding with a truck driven by Jeffrey Hamilton, 36, of McDowell, Kentucky.

Hamilton and Karen Mitchell, 43, of Hi Hat, both died at the scene. Mitchell was a passenger in Slone's truck.

Commonwealth Attorney Brent Turner tells WSAZ.com Slone pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter and two counts of assault.

Turner says Slone will receive 20 years on the manslaughter counts and 12 years each on the assault counts. The sentences will be served concurrently. He will be formally sentenced on September 5.

FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A man charged with two counts of murder in connection with a fatal traffic accident has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

James Slone, 33, of Melvin, Ky., was arrested earlier this month after being indicted by a Floyd County Grand Jury.

During a hearing Tuesday in Floyd County Circuit Court, Slone entered a not guilty plea.

The judge then set a January 12 per-trial date. His bond will remain at $1 million.

Investigators say Slone was driving east on Ky. 122 in June when he crossed the center line, colliding with a truck driven by Jeffrey Hamilton, 36, of McDowell, Ky.

Hamilton, 36, of McDowell, and Karen Mitchell, 43, of Hi Hat, both died at the scene. Mitchell was a passenger in Slone's truck.

Besides the two counts of murder, Slone is charged with four counts of assault and one count of DUI.

Slone is being held in the Floyd County Detention Center.

FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A man been charged with two counts of murder in connection with a fatal traffic accident in Floyd County was in court Thursday.

James Slone, 33, of Melvin, Ky., was arrested Tuesday after being indicted by a Floyd County Grand Jury.

During a hearing Thursday in Floyd County Circuit Court, Slone’s bond was set at one million dollars. His next court appearance is set for October 25.

Investigators say Slone was driving east on Ky. 122 in June when he crossed the center line, colliding with a truck driven by Jeffrey Hamilton, 36, of McDowell, Ky.

Hamilton, 36, of McDowell, and Karen Mitchell, 43, of Hi Hat, both died at the scene. Mitchell was a passenger in Slone's truck.

Besides the two counts of murder, Slone is charged with four counts of assault and one count of DUI.

Slone is being held in the Floyd County Detention Center.

FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Two people died in a head-on collision in Floyd County Wednesday night.

It happened on Route 122 in the Hunter Community.

State Police say James Slone was driving east when his truck crossed the center line, colliding with a truck driven by Jeffrey Hamilton.

Hamilton, 36, of McDowell, and Karen Mitchell, 43, Hi Hat, both died at the scene. Mitchell was a passenger in Slone's truck.

Police say passengers from both trucks were airlifted to a hospital in Tennessee to be treated for their injuries.

The accident is still under investigation.
