GREENUP COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A $3.3 million Transportation Cabinet project to resurface, widen and add turning lanes to parts of the AA Highway (Ky. 10) in Greenup County started Wednesday, according to a news release from Kentucky Department of Highways District 9.

The project includes 4 miles of new blacktop on the AA Highway from Ky. 7 near Beechy past the U.S. 23 intersection to the Greenup Locks and Dam crossing at the Ohio River. In addition, a mile of the roadway from U.S. 23 to the dam will be widened to add new left-turn lanes onto KY 3116 and an extended right-turn lane onto US 23 north.

Contractors plan to start the road-widening and turn lanes first, with traffic impacts beginning Monday, March 31, between U.S. 23 and the dam.

Two-way traffic will be maintained during construction, but travel will be shifted off existing lanes. Motorists should be prepared for intermittent lane closures and backups over the next two weeks as contractors prepare the traffic shift.

Motorists should also watch for frequent traffic changes in the area, heed all flaggers and warning signs, and slow down to protect both themselves – the majority of work zone crashes injure drivers – and construction workers.

The speed limit on the AA Highway has been reduced to 45 miles per hour throughout the work zone. In Kentucky, work zones are double-fine zones while workers are present.

The work is being done under a $3,321,000 low-bid contract awarded to Mountain Enterprises Inc. The project is expected to be finished by mid- to late August.
