The government mandated switch to digital television is set for February 17, 2009. After that date, old analog TVs won't work without a special converter box.

If you watch WSAZ over the air with an antenna or rabbit years with an older television, you'll need one of those boxes. It plugs into the television to change your current analog signal into a digital one.

The government and broadcasters, across the country, are rushing to get viewers ready for the big switch before it's too late.

Aaron Withrow is the Engineering Manager here at WSAZ. Apathy, in this case, can cause your screen to go dark. Aaron says, "it's a big mistake not doing anything, not paying attention." He says if that happens one day you'll turn on your analog TV and nothing will be there.

Beginning the week of January 7th, the government is offering $40 coupons that would slash the price of one of the converter boxes down to $10 or $20.

why should i want a coupon. if the cable company wants my business they should supply me with free digital. i pay enough for cable as it is.

why would we need a coupon. in other states and cities the service is free. i recently visited my son in columbus, he gets local hdtv free. and if the state is so worried about us watching wvu games they need to supply me with a free digital box. in my opinion we should not have to pay for a digital or hd box. in other cities and states it is standard service. cable companies i wv get by with charging for too many things that they should have to supply with no charge. even satelite companies give you free equipment and make their money on monthly charges. why do you think they started giving away free equipment, phones etc. they make money on the monthly charges. we need better cable companies in wv that will help all recieve a tv signal.

Here's the government again telling us what kind of tv we can watch. Most folks can't afford a new tv or one of those boxes. Most are getting hosed by the cable company monopolies too.
