Tammy Hamilton is homeless! A fire, on January 22nd, destroyed her home. Right now, she, her husband and 5 children have no place to live. When asked what she feels when she hears the word "homeless" she says, "no home, nowhere to go, to place for my kids to be warm and safe."

According to the Counseling Center in Portsmouth, the "Point in Time Count" that the Scioto County Continuum of Care (Housing Continuum) conducted on January 29 is required by HUD. It helps decide the funding available to each state housing agency. Nearly 40 local people took blankets, snacks, handmade hats and basic hygiene supplies to Scioto County's homeless people.

In Scioto County, 81 families involving 277 people, were homeless for at least one night in the Fiscal Year 2007 due to fire or flood. This number is one of the largest in the state of Ohio.

I am a residednt in Portsmouth and cannot beleive the activity taking place in my home town. The (answere) bring jobs to scioto county.. I have to drive over an hour to my job spending over 400.00 in gas each month.Bringing fast food jobs to Portsmouth is not the solution. Maybe if this town didnt revolve around a certain few who want to control this area.. but why would they not want it to grow and work on keeping it a slum town..OOh drop the property value and buy it all up cheap. I think we just figured it all out!! Well I have spoken to a few homless and they are mainly people who use to have jobs and now are playing right into the Oxytown they created..

It is a shame that so many people are homeless in this country. When I hear elected officials saying the economy is doing OK and today that President Bush is cutting funding for lots of domestic programs it really makes me sick. We can spend so much money in Iraq and cannot house our homeless population. Children should never have to be homeless in this country.
