There are more than 24 people living in nothing but cardboard boxes in Portsmouth. It's their home for several days this week, calling attention to those who are homeless in Scioto County, Ohio.

Donna Mullis lives on the streets. She says, ""I'm scared, I never know where I'm going to be from one day to the next." She adds,
"It's a really lonely world out here and nobody cares about you."

Students from Shawnee State University are sacrificing comfort to show they care about the problem. The goal of this event is to raise money to supply the Scioto County Homeless Shelter with daily necessities.

The hope is to raise more than $1,500, which would help pay for a year's worth of supplies.

According to the Counseling Center in Portsmouth, Scioto County has twice the poverty rate than the state average at more than 15 percent.
In Scioto County, more than 80 families, roughly 275 people, were homeless for at least one night in 2007 because of tragedy like fire or flood. That number is one of the largest in the state of Ohio.

To Rob, whoever you are of course you haven't seen any of these homeless people .. They don't lay right ou in the middle of the street or right out where anyone can see them because the cops would harass them. I would almost bet that you lead a sheltered life, possibly still at home with Mommy and Daddy? Like Phil Collins sings "It's just another day in paradise for you and I". If you ever get a chance to watch that video, it is very sad. Another sad video is Toby Keith's Santa I'm Right Here, it's about a homeless family who's house has burned down and the little boy is asking santa Claus for things that his family needs. I can't watch that one without crying, it is very sad and the reason it is so sad is because it really does happen everyday to people. There are people out there doing without because of tragedy in their life. Then we have people with huge bank accounts more money than they could ever spend without an ounce of compassion in their hearts. I just don't understand.

yeah this activity is pretty stupid if you ask me, why not just ask everyone to donate money, i would, but when they all bombarde you on your way to class begging for food and money its annoying, anyone can camp outside for days and say they are roughing it, but this is a slap in the face and almost a joke to anyone who really has to live this way. and most of these "homeless" people in portsmouth standing on the corner with "will work for food" signs have new haircuts, brand new clothes and shoes, yeah i dont feel very sorry for them, i barely make it with a part time job and being a full time student but i dont expect charity.

I will tell you I attend Shawnee State University and I have seen them do this every year. They are really experiencing homeless life. They do not eat unless someone gives them food. They cannot go and buy food either. The only time they're away from their cardboard houses is to go to class. And someone actually watches to make sure they do not eat. They do not take showers or anything like that. I know its not 100% like being homeless but they are roughing it as much as possible to see what it's really like. I would like to see how many people would actually go out and experience the homeless life.

I was a part of SSU's Shantytown. None of us claimed to be living a homeless life. It was an opportunity to humble ourselves and to peer into a minute aspect of a less fortunate life. Monday night we had a coordinator of Scioto County's homeless shelter speak with us. She told us: Many cases of homelessness are not of lethargy or substance abuse. Many homeless have carried jobs (sometimes more than one job) just to be advised to quit because they would be making too much money to apply for welfare or services at a shelter but not enough to be self sufficient. Many homeless people are people who started off gettin by making it paycheck to paycheck, making enough to save only a little if any at all. Imagine being a second, third, or even fourth generation to do so. Homelessness and paycheck to paycheck living is a hard slump to get yourself out of. Next time you see a homeless person imagine what would happen if the most unfortunate circumstance put you in that situation and u r neglected

To Justice: $14,460 -$6000 rent(500)=$8460. -$4200 ulilities(350)=$4260.-$5200 food(400)=$-940. -$1300 misc(shampoo, soap, detergent, toilet paper, tooth paste etc.)= -$2240. - medical- clothing-car insurance--- Negative $6000 Min. a year. NO money for entertainment, such as movie, ice cream cone, skating. Could you live this way? Do you only want to eat bologna and ramin noodles? What about fruit and vegetables? Because a person is poor are they not suppose to eat healthy? There are some who live on the street by choice but the majority don't. Does that make them sub-human? I would like to see people like you forced to live on the streets for one month in the winter. Meet the people who must survive this way. If you are a decent person you would change your opinion. Remember you are only one crisis away from the streets. We as a nation turn a blind eye to the suffering in our own country. What happened to compassion and caring for our neighbors? Judge not. I could be your MOTHER.

WELL JENNIFER IN OHIO MIN WAGE IS $14,460.00 PER YEAR, SO EVEN IF THAT PERSON WAS PAYING 500.00 PER MONTH RENT, THATS STLL $8560.00 PER YEAR TO LIVE ON. WALKING IS NOT CROWDED AND RAMIN NOODLES AND BOLOGNA ARE CHEAP MEALS. PEOPLE NEED TO PUT THEIR HANDS AWAY OR START USING THEM TO PULL THEIR OWN WEIGHT.

Hmm maybe I have my eyes closed. But I have never seen any of these "homeless" you speak about.

Hey - lemme tell ya, there are over 40,000 service veterans living under bridges, homeless. FORTY THOUSAND! What is even worse, is that over 120 of them commit suicide each and every WEEK. This, after they gave their service and duty to our country. They come home to a lousy deal. Lousy health care and broken promises. What is worse is this "Do Nothing" Congress of ours. SHame on them, shame on us.

Not all homeless people are homeless because of drugs or refusing to work. You need to do more research or actually interact with a homeless person before judging. Just bc u have a min.wage job around here doesn't mean u have enough for rent for $500 a month. I was homeless & it wasn't bc of drugs or not working. And if Portsmouth students want to really experience homeless life don't set up boxes outside of a school & say ur roughing it like a homeless person. Actually go out & live like one for a few days. And Anonymous homeless shelters only let you stay so long & they will turn u away. The U.S. is worried about people in other countries being hungry & homeless we need to worry about our people here first..

With the housing problems this country is facing be careful what you say. it is not always someone else, it could be you!

It's easy for someone to fall through the cracks and end up homeless. We all should be more thankful for what we have and help those who don't have a home. Homeless people are real people too. Some are mentally ill and can't cope in this harsh dog eat dog world. I think it would do us all some good to sleep out in a cardboard box.

I KNOW A GUY THAT OFFER WORK TO A GUY THAT WAS HOLDING A SING THAT SAID WILL WORK FOR FOOD WHEN HE TOLD HIM HE WOULD GIVE HIM A JOB HE SAID NO

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 15, 2008 at 08:06 PM
i always find it difficult to feel sorry for the homeless. because there are so many resources out there for people in this situation. most of these people have drug abuse problems and refuse to work. therefore how can we help them if they set and refuse to help them selves.
