Soldier Home for Christmas

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Christmas is a special time of year to share with friends and family. For Sgt. Robert Geer, spending Christmas with his family means more than ever before.

Geer is home for Christmas for the first time in five years. He's been in Afghanistan for the past six months. In September, a land mine blew up next to him while he was helping an injured soldier. The explosion severely injured his left arm, side, and leg. Geer says being home this Christmas is special.

"It means a lot," Geer said. "To be home with my family after such a tragic event means everything."

Since the explosion, Geer has been on a long road to recovery. He has been at a rehabilitation hospital in San Antonio off and on since October. Geer is in a wheelchair and stays off his feet as much as possible. He can walk, but only with a walker, crutch or help from a family member.

Robert's mother Gayle Geer says seeing her son recover has been a blessing.

"I'm very thankful," Gayle said. "He is still alive and that is the most important thing."

In September, Geer was awarded a Purple Heart for his act of courage. For Christmas, Geer gave family members a plaque with a copy of his Purple Heart certificate.
