UPDATE 4/30/14 @ 5:50 p.m.
PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (WSAZ) – As kids, Candace Adkins and her brother Donald Kidd didn’t always get along.

“He chased me with bugs, with grasshoppers and worms, used to put them down my back,” Adkins said, laughing.

They became closer as adults, and when Kidd, 51, was murdered in May 2011, Adkins tells WSAZ.com she prayed the case wouldn’t go cold.

Kidd, a car salesman from Ashland, Ky., was found dead from a gunshot wound inside his own burned car in Portsmouth, Ohio.

“People tend to think we're not doing anything, or they get frustrated at the amount of time it takes to solve a case,” Portsmouth Police Chief Robert Ware said.

Ware said that after nearly three years of investigating, his department has made an arrest.

Donald L. Richardson, Jr., 52, of Portsmouth, has been charged with several felonies, including murder, felonious assault, tampering with evidence, arson and abuse of a corpse.

Police have not released a motive for the murder.

“I went to my knees, I was numb and I couldn't say nothing but thank you, thank you, thank you,” Adkins said of the phone call she received from police.

For Adkins, it’s a heartbreaking situation but a step toward closure. “I know he made it to heaven,” Adkins said.

Richardson is being held at the Scioto County Jail.

He has not yet been arraigned.
