ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The Athens County Health Department confirms a woman has died from the flu.

Dr. James R. Gaskell, Athens City County Health Department Commissioner, tells WSAZ.com a 31-year-old woman died this week from H1N1.

Dr. Gaskell tells WSAZ.com the woman did receive a flu shot and the H1N1 strand is in the vaccination.

The health department is unaware if she had any underlying issues.

Dr. Gaskell says the woman was originally taken to an Athens hospital, then promptly moved to a Columbus hospital, where she passed away this week.

Dr. Gaskell tells WSAZ.com this stand of the flu is the same one that caused a pandemic in 2009. However he says we are not currently having a pandemic.

According to Dr. Gaskell, H1N1 does effect young people, unlike other flu strands that effect the youth and elderly.

Dr. Gaskell suggests getting a flu vaccine if you have still not received one, and suggests washing your hands. "Getting a flu shot is really important. This is a serious disease. It can be dangerous in certain individuals," Dr. Gaskell told WSAZ.com.

According to labs at an Athens hospital, Dr. Gaskell says reports show that more people have been showing up with positive flu tests over the past couple of weeks. He says about 1-2 people per week have positive flu tests.

Dr. Gaskell says last year, there was a resurgence of Type B Flu, but that has not been the case so far this year.

According to the CDC, there have been six flu related deaths reported in the 2013-2014 flu season. Dr. Gaskell says two children have died in the US from the flu this season.

A flu related death was also reported this week in Cabell County. Dr. Harry Tweel says this death was also an Influenza A (H1N1) case.
