UPDATE 10/30/12
IRONTON, Ohio (WSAZ) -- An Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) inspector will take a closer look at the Ironton-Russell Bridge Tuesday following a report Monday night that a portion of the bridge deck shifted as much as 6 inches.

Following that report, the bridge was closed for about an hour so ODOT officials could determine if there was a problem.

ODOT Spokesperson Kathleen Fuller tells WSAZ.com that inspectors did find an elevation shift of about three-quarters of an inch in the bridge deck near the Ohio side abutment. Fuller says that is consistent with the temperature shift of recent days and not considered to be an issue for drivers. She says the initial report of a problem came from Ironton Police.

Fuller says that during Tuesday's inspection no changes or significant differences were found in the elevation of the bridge deck.

The steel truss bridge spans the Ohio River between Ironton and Russell, Ky. It opened in 1922.

Fuller also tells WSAZ.com that there is an electronic stress monitoring system in place on the bridge. She says there were no alerts Monday night.

Again, the bridge is open as normal Tuesday.

A groundbreaking was held in May for a new Ironton-Russell Bridge. Construction is expected to be completed in the fall of 2015.
