LAWRENCE COUNTY, OHIO (WSAZ) --A woman who’s unoccupied parked van was hit by a train at a railroad crossing in Coal Grove now faces numerous charges.
Coal Grove Police say the incident happened at the Lane Street Cross about 9:45 Sunday night.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found an unoccupied van parked in the middle of the tracks with the motor running and the doors locked. Minutes later, a train smashed into the van, knocking it some 2,000 feet down the tracks.
Police tell WSAZ.com that after the train came to a stop, they found the driver and her two dogs sitting on tracks about 8-10 feet in front of the stopped train. The 34-year-old woman from Ashland was not hurt.
The woman was taken to the Lawrence County Jail where she faces numerous charges. She is also expected to undergo a mental evaluation.
Lawrence County dispatchers tell WSAZ.com the woman who was driving got out of the vehicle and started walking up the tracks toward the Ashland bridge.
They say it happened sometime after 9:30 Sunday night.
The train hit the empty van near the intersection of Lane and Pike streets in Coal Grove.
Dispatchers say police, fire and EMS crews are on scene and are trying to locate the driver, who left the scene.
