SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) – A Scioto County grand jury has indicted a member of the Valley Township Fire Department for the alleged theft of thousand of dollars in department funds.
Scioto County Sheriff Deputies arrested Emily Campbell, 27, of Lucasville, on Saturday after she was indicted on one count of felony theft on Thursday.
Capt. Kyle Hood says everyone on the department is shocked.
"She ran squad, she was a firefighter, she would help you however she could,” Hood said. “Nobody would have thought anything bad about the girl."
Sheriff Marty Donini says that on March 26, the Valley Township Fire Chief contacted the Sheriff’s Office about several thousand dollars missing from an account.
Donini says the alleged missing money was from a fundraising account to build a new fire department. None of the money was from the tax levy.
Donini says that Campbell was the treasurer of that account.
"This individual helped raise the funds alongside their fellow members,” Township Trustee David See said. “No one would have ever expected her to do something like this."
She is being held in the Scioto County Jail without bond.
A date for her arraignment has not been set.
The funds being raised by the fire department were the first steps in getting an architectural design.
A levy will be on the ballot in November that would raise $1.1 million to get the new station built.
