UPDATE: Mental Evaluation Ordered for Kidnapping Suspect

GALLIPOLIS, Ohio (WSAZ) -- No bond was set for a man charged with kidnapping and assault, but a judge did order he have a mental evaluation.

Richard Roderick, 71, was in Gallipolis Municipal Court Tuesday afternoon.

Roderick is charged with kidnapping his wife over the weekend and holding her against her will.

He is also facing fleeing and assault charges in an unrelated case that happened late last month.

During Tuesday's hearing, a judge from Franklin County did not set bond, but orderedRoderick undergo a mental evaluation.

Roderick is a former criminal law attorney in Gallipolis.

According to the court, two local judges recused themselves from the case. The Ohio Attorney General's Office will now be prosecuting the case at the request of the Gallia County Prosecutor's Office.

Roderick is scheduled to be back in court next month.

GALLIPOLIS, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A man is behind bars, charged with kidnapping his wife.

Gallipolis Police say Richard C. Roderick, 71, of Gallipolis, was arrested on Saturday.

Police say they got a 911 call from a residence in the 200-block of 1st Avenue. They say the 911 operator heard what sounded like an argument in the background.

When they responded to the home, they found the front door open, and Roderick and a woman in the bedroom.

According to the criminal complaint, the woman in the bedroom was Roderick's wife. Her hands and feet were bound with rope.

Roderick is being held in the Middleport Jail.

He is also facing fleeing and assault charges from a prior incident that happened last month.

According to the criminal complaints, on October 31, police were responding to a BOLO for Roderick's vehicle. They were told he was possibly mentally unstable.

He led police on a chase, reaching speeds of about 45 mph in a 25 mph zone.

According to the criminal complaint from Gallipolis Municipal Court, Roderick bumped into a police cruiser five or six times as they were trying to get him to pull over.

Once they got him into custody, they took him to the hospital, where he is accused of attacking the doctor with a pen.

Roderick is a former criminal law attorney in Gallipolis.

Roderick is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Gallipolis Municipal Court. According to the court, two judges have recused themselves from the case. A judge from Franklin County will be sitting on the case.

The Ohio Attorney General's Office will be prosecuting the case at the request of the Gallia County Prosecutor's Office.
