IRONTON, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Golf carts will soon hit the streets of Ironton.

City Council passed an ordinance Thursday night that will allow residents to drive golf carts on the streets.

Councilman Aaron Bollinger tells the ordinance passed with a vote of 4-3.

The ordinance goes into effect in 30 days.

According to the ordinance, residents still have to follow state requirements for driving. You must be 16 years or older, with a valid license to drive a golf cart on city streets. Insurance and lights on the golf cart are also requirements. The speed limit for golf carts will be 35 miles per hour.

Ironton Police Chief Dan Johnson will prepare a plan for inspections of the golf carts.

Bollinger tells, "I feel this is an opportunity for Ironton to stand out."

Gallipolis, Ohio, and Point Pleasant, W.Va., have similar ordinances in place.
