SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- It only took a jury six minutes to convict a man of attacking a guard while he was in prison.

A Scioto County Common Pleas Jury found Alonzo Johnson, 32, of Hamilton County, Ohio, guilty of felonious assault on a corrections officer Monday.

Investigators say Johnson was serving a 10-year sentence at the Southern Ohio Corrections Facility for rape, when he attacked a guard. The attack happened on June 7, 2013.

Witnesses testified in the trial that Johnson left the dining hall and hit a Corrections Officer Jeffrey Meier in the head and face repeatedly.

It took several minutes of struggling before officers were able to subdue Johnson.

Meier received several injuries, which have prevented him from returning to work.

During sentencing, the Scioto County Assistant Prosecutor Matthew Wisecup argued that Johnson had a violent criminal history and showed no remorse for his actions.

Judge William T. Marshall sentenced Johnson to eight years in prison for the assault.
