At the time of his arrest, there were more than 600 newspapers in Donohew's vehicle. He admitted to stealing the papers from Gallipolis and in Mason County, W.Va., saying he needed the coupons to help buy food for his family.
Donohew was sentenced to three days in jail or 10 days house arrest, one year probation, a $25 fine and $860 in restitution to the Gallipolis Daily Tribune.
Paul Donohew, 45, of Gallipolis Ferry, West Virginia, a former contracted newspaper carrier for the Gallipolis Daily Tribune, was arrested Sunday after city police officers say he was taking several newspapers from a paper vending machine.
The police department had received information that Donohew may have been stealing papers from various locations throughout the city for the past six weeks.
On Sunday an officer saw Donohew pull out of a parking spot by a newspaper vending machine on Eastern Avenue. The officer followed him to the Silver Bridge Plaza, where he saw Donohew pull up by another vending machine, open the vending machine, take all of the papers and put them in his car.
Donohew originally denied stealing the papers, then later admitted that he had been stealing the newspapers to get coupons so it would be easier to buy food for his family. He also admitted to stealing papers from Mason County and different spots around Gallia County.
Gallipolis Police say there were nearly 600 newspapers in Donohew's vehicle when he was arrested.
He also had a small metal disk, called a slug, that allows you access to the machines without paying for the newspapers.
