UPDATE: Trial Date Set in Beating Death Case

ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A 20-year-old charged in the beating death of another young man will go on trial in July.

Gary Wooten from Glouster, Ohio is charged with felonious assault and involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of Harley Pruitt.

Wooten and Pruitt got into a fight last month. Pruitt died from his injuries a couple of days later.

He was 20-years-old and from Buchtel.

This week Wooten pleaded not guilty to the charges and a trial date was set for July 24.

Bond was set at $40,000.

ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The case against a man charged in a beating death earlier this month is now headed to a grand jury for possible indictment.

Gary Wooten, 20, of Glouster, is charged with the murder of Aaron Pruitt, 20, of Buchtel, Ohio.

The Athens County Sheriff’s Office says the incident happened May 2 at a house along Main Street in Chauncey.

When emergency responders got to the house they found Pruitt unconscious and not breathing. He died the two days later at a Columbus hospital.

The case against Wooten was sent to a grand jury following his preliminary hearing in Athens Municipal Court Wednesday afternoon.

A published report says testimony at the hearing indicated that Pruitt was hit in the head and face multiple times.



UPDATE 5/4/12 @ 2:20 p.m.
ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A beating victim has died, and now the man investigators say is responsible has been charged with murder in the case.

Wednesday evening, deputies in Athens County found Harley Aaron Pruitt, 20, of Buchtel, Ohio unconscious and not breathing at a residence along Main Street in Chauncey.

Sheriff Pat Kelly says Pruitt died at 1:45 Friday afternoon in a Columbus, Ohio hospital.

Gary Wooten, 20, of Glouster, was arrested shortly after the incident and originally charged with felonious assault. The charge has now been upgraded to murder.

Sheriff Kelly says statements given to detectives indicated the two men were involved in an altercation approximately four years ago while they were in high school.

Kelly says a number of people who were present during the incident on Wednesday said that after Pruitt and Wooten exchanged words and the situation escalated into a fist fight between the two 20-year-olds.

The Franklin County Coroner will determine an exact cause of death.

Wooten is being held in Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail.

ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A man has been arrested and charged in connection with a beating that has left the victim in critical condition.

Wednesday evening, deputies in Athens County found Harley Aaron Pruitt, 20, of Buchtel, Ohio, unconscious and not breathing at a residence along Main Street in Chauncey.

Pruitt was taken to O’Bleness Hospital by ambulance then transferred by helicopter to a Columbus hospital. He is still in critical condition Thursday morning.

Sheriff Pat Kelly says Gary Wooten, 20, of Glouster, has been arrested and charged with felonious assault in connection with the beating.

Wooten is being held in Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail.

ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A man was critically beaten Wednesday evening in Chauncey, according to information from Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly.

Harley Aaron Pruitt, 20, of Buchtel, Ohio, was found unconscious and not breathing at a residence along Main Street in Chauncey. Deputies discovered him just after 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Pruitt was taken to O’Bleness Hospital by ambulance then transferred by helicopter to a Columbus hospital. He was listed in critical condition.
