HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A woman charged with misdemeanor negligent homicide in connection with a fatal five-vehicle crash on the West 17th Street Bridge in Huntington has been given probation during a court hearing Thursday.

A grand jury indicted Tanika Shantel Jones following May 2011 accident that killed Dwayne Lawson of Gallipolis.

Following the crash, investigators said that Jones’ vehicle entered the bridge from the Washington Avenue on-ramp and clipped Lawson's vehicle, which was traveling north and getting ready to cross the bridge.

The contact caused Lawson's vehicle to cross the center line and into the path of a third vehicle that was traveling south and preparing to exit the bridge.

Those two vehicles were then struck by a fourth vehicle that was also attempting to exit at the Washington Avenue exit. A fifth vehicle also was struck from the rear.

Lawson died at the scene.

Jones pleaded no contest to the negligent homicide charge.

During a hearing Thursday in Cabell County Circuit Court, Jones was sentenced to six month in jail, but the sentence was then reduced to one year probation.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A deadly accident in Huntington has one woman facing charges of negligent homicide.

According to court documents, Tanika Shantel Jones is facing charges of negligent homicide in connection to the fatal accident that killed Dwayne Lawson.

The accident happened on the West 17th Street Bridge, in Huntington, back in May.

A preliminary investigation showed that a vehicle entering the bridge from the Washington Avenue on ramp clipped Lawson's vehicle, which was northbound and ready to cross the bridge.

The contact caused Lawson's vehicle to cross the center line into the path of a third vehicle going southbound and preparing to exit the bridge.

Lawson died at the scene of the crash.

Jones will be back in court to face the charges of the indictment.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A Gallipolis, Ohio, man is identified as the victim who died in a multiple vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon on the West 17th Street Bridge, according to a Huntington Police Department news release.

Dwayne Thomas Lawson of Gallipolis died at the scene. The exact cause of his death is under investigation.

A preliminary investigation shows that a vehicle entering the bridge from the Washington Avenue on ramp clipped Lawson's vehicle, which was northbound and ready to cross the bridge.

The contact caused Lawson's vehicle to cross the center line into the path of a third vehicle going southbound and preparing to exit the bridge.

The two vehicles were then struck by a fourth also attempting to exit the southbound side of the bridge toward Washington Avenue. A fifth vehicle also was struck from the rear.

The crash caused the bridge to be closed for nearly three and a half hours; it reopened about 7 p.m.

There is still no word about how seriously injured the other victims were.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Huntington Police tell WSAZ.com the West 17th Street Bridge reopened around 7 p.m. Wednesday.

That was after a multiple vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon that killed one person.

Other people were hurt, but there's no word on how seriously.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- One person is dead after a multiple vehicle accident on a Huntington bridge.

It happened around 3:45 Wednesday afternoon.

Huntington Police tell WSAZ.com that one person did die in the accident. There was no word on other injuries. Five vehicles were involved in the accident.

The accident happened about 3:45 Wednesday at the Washington Avenue entrance ramp.

We know one person has been injured.

Drivers are urged to used the downtown Robert C. Byrd bridge.

No word on when the bridge will reopen.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Emergency crews are on a five vehicle crash at the foot of the West 17th Street Bridge in Huntington.

The accident was reported about 3:45 Wednesday afternoon at the Washington Avenue entrance ramp in Huntington.

This is the bridge crossing the Ohio River.

No word on injuries at this time.
