ATHENS, Ohio (WSAZ) -- City officials in Athens, Ohio are preparing for the annual Halloween Block Party, which will take place this weekend.

In a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Athens Mayor Paul Wiehl said the city will close Court, President, Union, and Washington streets starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Athens Police Chief Tom Pyle spoke about the importance of keeping house parties under control.

"So far, it's been a pretty passive school year. We've had a lot of cooperation in dealing with parties who are in violation of nuisance party ordinances, and I expect that to continue this weekend," said Pyle.

Wiehl encouraged both students and Athens visitors to be on their best behavior during the Halloween party.

"Be a good guest. Everyone knows how to be a nice guest at home when they visit someone else's house or city, so that would be the first thing to say, and have fun. Please dress up. Its always better when you're in costume. I can speak from experience on that," Wiehl said.

Thousands of guests are expected in the city Saturday, and extra police will be on patrol.

While Wiehl said safety is the city's main priority on Saturday, he added that he wants all of Athens to enjoy the Halloween weekend.

The city plans to have an information kiosk set up outside of the Athens City Building on West Washington Street to provide party-goers with assistance, especially those from out of town.

During the 2011 party, more than 50 people were arrested by Athens and OU Police. The majority of the arrests were alcohol related, including several disorderly by intoxication and underage drinking arrests.
