UPDATE 1/2/13 @ 10:58 a.m.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio wildlife officials say more than 190,000 deer have been killed by hunters so far in 2012-13 season.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources numbers released Wednesday showed 190,725 deer were taken during the first 95 days of this year's hunting season. That's down a little more than 1 percent from the same period in last year's season.

The number includes 86,964 deer killed during the week-long gun season, and another 14,365 taken during the additional gun weekend last month.

Coshocton County leads all Ohio counties in the number of deer harvested so far, followed by Licking, Tuscarawas, Muskingum and Guernsey - all in central or eastern Ohio.

According to the ODNR, the four-day muzzleloader season for deer opens Saturday. Archery season remains open through Feb. 3.

UPDATE 11/26/12
LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A lot of people got up before daylight Monday morning to prepare or the big day. It wasn't for Cyber Monday shopping, but rather, for the first day of deer season for gun hunters in Ohio.

Hunters crept into the woods Monday morning hoping to find that trophy buck, but Billy Adkins, of Crown City, Ohio, says even if you don't get a deer it's just a good time with friends.

"It was fine, it was cold but I pretty much sat there waiting on a deer, walk around," said Adkins.

"Did you have to wait very long?" asked WSAZ.com.

"I didn't kill one," Adkins said.

Adkins and his friend plan on going back into the woods Monday afternoon to try for another deer.

ORIGINAL STORY
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio's deer-gun season is expected to draw about 420,000 hunters this year.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Division of Wildlife says the hunting week began Monday morning and runs through Dec. 2.

The season also will include an extra weekend of hunting Dec. 15-16.

Deer can be hunted with a muzzleloader, handgun or shotgun from one half-hour before sunrise to sunset during the season. The state encourages all hunters to take proper safety precautions, such as using safety harnesses in tree stands and wearing hunter orange.

Hunters also are encouraged to donate any extra venison to organizations assisting Ohioans in need.

The Division of Wildlife says hunting has an $859 million economic impact each year in Ohio through the sale of equipment, fuel, food, lodging and more.
