Ohio University Students Recycling to Win Competition

IRONTON, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Students and staff at Ohio University Southern are raising awareness about the need for recycling.

They're collecting thousands of pounds of trash for "Recycle-Mania", an 8-week competition.

It all piled up on what they call "Mt. Trashmore".

For the 6th year, the school's Ironton campus is competing against other colleges across the United States.

School leaders said in about two weeks, they've gathered about 2,400 pounds of trash to be recycled.

"I had no idea that ten days of garbage would produce nearly a ton and a half of waste, it's amazing to see how much you actually produce and if you could help a little bit it will go a long way," said OU Southern Junior, Sarah Simmons.

Last year, the university recycled 8,000 pounds of trash at its Ironton campus, ranking the school third in the competition last year.
