UPDATE 1/7/14 @ 1:45 p.m.
LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The Ohio Department of Transportation says the Ironton-Russell Bridge has reopened to traffic.

The bridge was closed after the temperature dipped below 5 degrees Monday evening.

Tuesday, ODOT bridge engineers and inspectors conducted tests on the bridge and concluded it may be reopened.

According to data gathered from the gauges on the bridge and their field review, no sudden decreases or increases were shown to have occurred during the closure when temperatures were at their coldest.

Closure of the Ironton-Russell Bridge is deemed necessary during extreme cold as the structure’s steel truss structure may not be wholly protected should it incur damage from any severe or unusual external force in sub-zero weather.

The bridge was closed more than 15 hours.

UPDATE 1/7/14 @ 9:30 a.m.
LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The Ohio Department of Transportation says the Ironton-Russell Bridge will remain closed until further notice.

The bridge was shut down at 10 p.m. Monday due to sub-zero temperatures.

ODOT officials say the bridge will not reopen until the temperature at the bridge is sustained at or above 5 degrees and an inspection is completed.

While the bridge is closed, motorists will be detoured via U.S. Route 52 and the Ashland, Kentucky, bridge at Coal Grove.

ORIGINAL STORY 1/6/14 @ 3:38 p.m.
GREENUP COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A bridge is being shut down due to inclement weather.

Greenup County 911 reports the Russell-Ironton bridge will close at 10 p.m. Monday, until further notice.

“With a forecast that calls for an overnight low temperature in Ironton at or nearly minus five (-5) degrees below zero and a wind chill of approximately -22 degrees, we have decided to close the Ironton-Russell Bridge in advance rather than wait until the overnight hours,” said ODOT District 9 Deputy Director Vaughn Wilson.

ODOT officials say although the bridge is safe for travel, the steel truss structure is not wholly guarded against temperatures sustained below zero should it incur damage from any severe or unusual external force.

They say they monitor the weather closely during cold-weather months, and in the event of projected sub-zero temperatures, the bridge is closed as a precautionary measure to ensure motorists’ safety and the structural integrity of the bridge.

Once the temperature is sustained above five (+5) degrees Fahrenheit, ODOT inspectors will conduct a field inspection to determine if any changes have been critical to the bridge’s load-carrying capacity.

While the bridge is closed, motorists will be detoured via U.S. Route 52 and the Ashland, Kentucky, bridge at Coal Grove.
