UPDATE 12/30/13 @ 10 p.m.
PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The Scioto County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting death after a neighbor found a man with an apparent gunshot wound on a back porch.

A little after 11 p.m. Sunday, Marcus Huston says he heard a gunshot next door on in the 3700 block of State Route 139 in Portsmouth.

He walked to the home and saw a man lying on the back porch. He says it appeared he’d been shot in the head.

Huston called 911. He recognized the victim, 45-year-old Sherman Martin.

"I was talking to him telling him everything was going to be alright, that help was coming,” Huston said. “I tried to comfort him as much as I could."

All the while, he didn’t know whether whoever pulled the trigger was still around.

"I yelled in the house to see if anybody was home,” he said. “I didn't want to walk in. Somebody shot him. I didn't want to be next."

The Scioto County Sheriff's Office is not saying whether anyone else was in the home when they arrived.

Martin died later at the hospital, deputies say.

He had lived a few miles north on 139 next to Denise Lockwood.

His home burned down a couple months ago. Deputies say the fire was deemed suspicious.

Lockwood had known Martin since high school. She believes it's all drug related.

"He's not a bad guy,” she said. “He just got hooked up with the wrong people.”

Martin had just gotten out of prison back in August. He’d been serving time on protection order violation, the sheriff’s department says.

Lockwood says regardless of his mistakes, no life should end like this.

“It's eating up Scioto County,” she said. “It's a shame to see it take good people like that."

Martin's body has been sent to Montgomery County for an autopsy.

Nobody who lives at the house where the shooting happened was home while a crew from WSAZ was there Monday evening.

Deputies say they do have some persons of interest in this case they're trying to locate.
