MINFORD, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Thieves are targeting air conditioning units in rural Scioto County, and it has people there on high alert.
"We're expected 50 people; it's just awful," Serena Miller said.
Miller is about to welcome her third grandchild and is hosting a big baby shower on Saturday.
"I don't know what we're going to do," she said. "We don't have any air conditioning and we've worked so hard."
Earlier this week, thieves hauled away two of the air conditioning units at The Sunshine Church of Christ in Portsmouth -- one of several churches hit within days of each other.
"It's probably the same suspects who've hit these all at once," Chief Deputy Todd Miller said. "The thing about churches, is it's usually a couple of days before people even notice they're gone."
Most of the thefts have happened in the Minford and South Webster areas of Scioto County.
Seven units have been stolen in just the last several days, including some of several businesses.
The churches victimized include the following:
"We've had calls of suspicious vehicles in neighborhoods," Miller said. "That's great. We're asking people to try and safety write down as much information about that vehicle as possible."
The sheriff's department has posted a picture of a late model MOPAR pickup truck that provide some clues. The Scioto County Sheriff has more details posted on the department's Facebook page.
The Rev. Steve Miller said the thieves are risking their lives and jail time for very little potential gain.
"All this for nothing, because the units were completely made of aluminum," Miller said. "They had no copper in them at all."
Anyone with information about this rash of AC thefts is urged to contact the Scioto County Sheriff's Office.
