SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Incumbent Scioto County Sheriff Marty Donini won his fifth consecutive term Tuesday night.
Donini, a Republican, defeated Democrat challenger New Boston Police Department Captain Steve Goins 13,305 votes to 11,905. Those numbers are unofficial.
Donini says the county has seen a lot of progress in the fight against drugs and crime under his watch, and he plans to continue what he's been doing as sheriff for the past 16 years.
"Hopefully the pain clinics are behind us. We'll have to continue battling that," Donini said. "Running the jail, that's a big deal too. We just plan on continuing the operations. A lot of people don't understand the operations of the sheriff's office, but a lot of it has to do with running a business."
Former Portsmouth Police Chief Charles Horner ran as an Independent. He picked up 4,751 votes.
