GALLIPOLIS, Ohio (WSAZ)-- For Sandy Byers of Gallipolis, Ohio: Santa Claus has most certainly come to town.
“I said I never had something like this happen, I'm just about to pass out. I said that's the most wonderful thing anybody has ever done,” Byers said.
With $137 in her purse Byers went to the Gallipolis Kmart prepared to leave with Christmas presents for five of her seven grandchildren, but someone beat Byers to the register.
“She said you owe a penny and I said a penny! I said there's got to be a mistake,” Byers said referring to her exchange with the Kmart cashier.
Charleston Kmart manager Billy Rasnake said someone has also paid off layaways in his Patrick-street store.
“We were getting worried they weren't going to come in this year but they came in last week paying some of these customer's layaways off,” Rasnake said.
Rasnake tells WSAZ.com, this year anonymous donors paid off between seven and eight thousand dollars worth of layaway gifts.
For Byers -- who can now use her layaway money for other purposes this holiday season, the timing couldn't have been better.
“I'd just love to know who it is just so I could give them a great big hug,” Byers said.
