Summer Stickies Spell Thunder

Tropical Air in Charge Again

Here in late August the entrenchment of soupy tropical air is nothing new. After all, late summer heat waves are often borne in stagnant air masses like the one we are now stuck in.

For the next week to ten days, the prospects of a new cool front to swoop in from the north are slim. That means any genuine drop in temperature will have to be rain generated or flat out have to wait for September.

So moist is this tropical air that new downpours can pepper down pretty much any place, any time into the weekend.

Timing and placement of these gully washers is virtually impossible until they form and move into your neighborhood.

That leaves many dry hours of watching radar only to have the weather outside good for planned events.

Let it suffice to say that street flooding and power hits will once again be a threat as the week rolls on, but as usual the water issues will be spotty.

While the heat of afternoon-evening is often the best time for thunderstorms to bubble up, it appears a wave of rain/thunder will pass right around dawn on Wednesday as Tuesday action from Chicago to Detroit passes through.

Kentucky football fans preparing for the start of the high school season will find the air stale and steamy for tailgates at East Carter for the Raceland Rams-East Carter Raiders game on Friday night.

In the longer term, signs of our first “genuine” heat wave of the season (we had one weak wave back in mid July) are showing for the week leading up to Labor Day.

Since a tropical storm is also a good bet in the Gulf next week, you could argue that it will have taken until almost September for summer to arrive!
