Sunday Spring Snowfall

March Lion Has More “Snow” Roar

A late season wet snowfall appears to be in the cards tonight into Sunday morning with a sloppy, dense accumulation likely in time for morning church services especially points east toward I-79, I-77.

While most of the accumulation will be on grass and above ground level surfaces, a slushy coating on roads and sidewalks can make traveling by foot or car slippery first thing Sunday morning.

Saturday afternoon’s chilly rain had turned to wet snow from suburban Cincinnati northward through the Buckeye State. Now there is an expected trend for rain to change to wet snow by sun down through most of Ohio and Northern Kentucky. That conversion to wet snow will push south and east into the Coalfields and the Ohio and Kanawha Valleys between 8 and 12 am.

The key time for accumulations will come after midnight as snow peppers down at a fast and furious rate of ½ to one inch per hour. In Ohio, Big Sandy and Kanawha Valley locations, the trick will be how much of the snow melts versus how much sticks. Odds favor a sopping wet 1”-2” for many valley locations with hilltops swelling to 4 even 5 inches.

The distribution of snow should be heavier east toward Charleston, so Southern Ohio and Northeastern Kentucky towns like Vanceburg, Greenup, Portsmouth and Gallipolis will likely see less snow than say Winfield, Spencer, Elkhorn City and Belfry.

Meteorologist Josh Fitzpatrick is quick to point out, “the roads and sidewalks have plenty of warmth stored in them after Friday and Saturday’s 50 to 60 degree highs. That will help to melt much of the snow that falls especially at first. However after midnight, the still long spring night will allow for slush to begin to accumulate.”

This will be the fifth snowfall of the month and will hoist March 2014 to rather lofty territory as Charleston makes it into the Top 5 snowiest.

So yes, March came in like a Lion with an early month arctic snow and it appears set to go out equally white with a sloppy snow.
